The year 2006 marked another milestone achievement for the LEADER Group as Leader Cable Industry Berhad (Leader Cable), a major wholly-owned subsidiary, celebrated its 30th Anniversary.
Leader Cable’s origin can be traced to 1976 when Dato' Seri H'ng Bok San, one of the founders established Leader Cable on a 12 acre manufacturing site in Tikam Batu, Kedah producing low voltage power cables, housing wires, telephone cables and aluminium conductors.
Dato’ Seri H'ng and his brother Dato’ Harry H'ng Bak Seah together with co-founder Dato’ Chung Chin Fu saw the potential of cables demand in Malaysia, and by 1986, Leader Cable began exporting overseas. In 1990, with its successful inroads into Singapore, Indonesia and China markets, Leader Cable was awarded the Prime Minister's Award for Exports Excellence followed by many other achievements. To date, the Group has a far-reaching presence spanning more than 60 countries worldwide in the Asia Pacific region, South India, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.
Starting as a supplier of cables, we are renowned for our advanced manufacturing facilities and efficiencies, product and management system excellence and quality standards.
One tremendous growth over the past years has earned us the recognition as the most reputable and reliable manufacturer in the local wire and cables industry. We are the largest producer of wire and cables in Malaysia and ASEAN and ranked as one of the leading Top 60 in the world by Integer Research, United Kingdom. The Group has cable manufacturing plants in Tikam Batu in Kedah and Pandan, Tampoi and Plentong in Johore Bahru that manufacture copper telecommunication cables, low, medium to high voltage power cables, aluminium rods, PVC compounds and various types of specialty cables for the oil & gas, shipbuilding and automobile industries.
The Group also has close partnership with internationally renowned cable companies in the industry.
Alpha Industries is a joint venture with Toyota Tsusho Corporation and The Furukawa
Electric Company Limited of Japan, operating two manufacturing plants producing copper rods and wires in Prai and Johor Bahru.
Operating from the Bayan Lepas Technoplex, Penang is LEADER’s associate, Lite Kabel Sdn. Bhd. with its extensive range of high tech manufacturing equipment, produces optical fibre cable.
Another associate of LEADER is Universal Cable Sarawak, which is a joint venture with the Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation and Central Paragon Sdn. Bhd.
In 1995, LEADER ventured into the first Malaysian-owned 35 megawatt IPP power plant in Phnom Penh, Cambodia jointly with GUH Holdings Berhad and Delcom Services Sdn Bhd.
On 27 March 2008, LEADER signed its 2nd Power Purchase Agreement, this time to build-operate-own a 200MV coal fired power plant in the port of Sihanoukville in Cambodia.
Apart from cable manufacturing and power generation business, the Group has also successfully undertaken numerous property development projects ranging from residential to commercial on Penang Island as well as the Mainland.
Compared to a sales revenue of RM3 million in Leader Cable’s maiden year of operations, the Group has hit sales beyond the RM2 billion mark as at todate.
